Srs ⭐ 10,487 SRS is a RTMP/HLS/WebRTC/SRT/GB28181 streaming cluster, high efficiency, stable and simple. Go Oryx ⭐ 606 The go-oryx is SRS, focus on real-time live streaming load-balancer. RTMP is the worst protocol choice to stream from a smartphone to vMix because RTMP requires a. Other streaming protocols like MPEG-TS, RTSP, MJPEG or even NDI just don't as they are based on point to point architecture, so they just work with vMix by default with lower latency and equivalent image and sound quality.
Most people who stream enjoy using services such as Dacast, Twitch or Ustream to deliver Live video to viewers, and that works well. But sometimes you want some more further control over your own stream, or you want other people to be capable to stream to you on your server, or you want to stream to multiple places or any plenty of things that require you to have access to an exact RTMP stream from an RTMP server. This example will cover the basics of establishing a simple RTMP server on a Linux server.
A couple things you can do with your own RTMP server that you might be interested in:
- Stream to multiple channels at the same time
- Import other people’s streams to incorporate for your own purposes (like multiple camera angles)
- RTMP Republishing and Playback
RTMP is actually remarkably light on system resources. Essentially it just grabs data from the input and forwards it on to the output, simple data transfer.
in order to setup your Own RTMP Server a VPS. I especially recommend Vultr or Digital Ocean as providers. Just make sure you have sufficient bandwidth…remember that bandwidth usage will be (the size of a stream) * (the number of people uploading + the number of people downloading).
I recommend using Ubuntu for the server software for the sake of ease, but you can obviously use whatever you want.

Note to Windows users: If you want to use Windows, you can find Windows binaries for nginx with the RTMP module already included here: http://nginx-win.ecsds.eu/download/
Note to Mac users: You can install nginx with the RTMP module via Homebrew: http://brew.sh/homebrew-nginx/
If you are hosting your server in your home, you will have to forward TCP port 1935 to the box…this varies by router, so look up how to set up port forwarding for your router. Also, I recommend using a dynamic DNS service to overcome dynamic IP issues that come up with residential hosting.
make sure you have the necessary tools to build nginx using the following command:
Now nginx is installed! By default it installs to /usr/local/nginx, so to start the server run the following command:
to test to make sure nginx is running, point your browser to http://yourip and you should get the “Welcome to nginx!” page.
at this step open your config file, located by default at /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf and add the following at the very end of the file:
Restart nginx with:
$ sudo /usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx -s stop
$ sudo /usr/local/nginx/sbin/nginx
Your server should now be ready to accept RTMP streams! Let’s try it out.
Create a new profile in OBS, and change your Broadcast Settings :
You may be wondering where that play path “test” came from. Well, we just made it up, just now. You can basically make up any play path and stream to it, and put that path into an RTMP player, and it will play back. For simple purposes, authentication isn’t necessary in my experience.
You should now be able to start streaming to your server. If you hit “Start Streaming” and don’t get an error from OBS, that’s a good sign.
So how do you watch it? The easiest way to do so is with VLC (v2.1.0 or later). Just Open a Network Stream and enter in rtmp://<your server ip>/live/test as the URL. If it all worked right, then you should now be seeing your stream in VLC!
You now have a working RTMP server! Congrats!
The best 3 ways to make a RTMP server.
Free Rtmp Server Software
First what is a RTMP server and even before that what is RTMP?
RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) is an application-level protocol owned by Adobe. It was originally designed for delivering on-demand media and live media (i.e live audio, video, and data) over the Internet between a Flash player and RTMP Media Server. For example we have the HTMP protocol, that is the sites which you can see on the browser, so the HTMP protocol is for website. While the RTMP is for media, it allows media files, like video, audio, images which can be easily be transferred or streamed by other users.
So the a rtmp server is a normal server, or a vps, which has a rtmp software which can then be used to transfer this media files.
Now the important thing on all this is what is this software? And the main softwares that create the RTMP are
1- Flash Media Server, now changed to Adobe Media Server.
2- Red5
3- Wowza, now called, Live Streaming Engine.
And these are the 3 main RTMP servers or softwares, there are other like Nginx, but not so well known and not really used for production purposes.
How it all started, the RTMP?
It started with Adobe, they the ones who created this software with flash media server, it is a high quality software and it is very expensive, $4500 for the license.
But we must explain the issues with the RTMP, it is very popular some years ago, 2010 and about, every one wanted to make video chats, the problem is that flash is going to be disabled at the end of this year 2020 and video chats with flash will stop working.
Rtmp Windows
But the RTMP has one incredible advantage, it is very fast between servers, a delay of 1 or 2 seconds of latency.
So RTMP will not go out soon because we can use for live streaming from the broadcaster to the server, using the RTMP and then on the server it is distributed on an.y device using instead of RTMP using HLS, which means HTTP Live Streaming.
The latency now is 20-25 seconds, so it cannot be used for video chats but is perfectly alright for live streaming and ondemand video streaming
Then we have Red5, which now has two versions the paid version called Red5 Pro and it is also expensive, difficult to manage but can be used for live streaming and for video chats.
Hosting Marketers uses the free open source software on all our servers, and it was the first shared hosting offering this service.
It is still used on some video chats but not sure what will happen after 2020….
You can read more about red5 on our old blog post “What is the use of Red5“
Then we have Wowza, which is the one we mostly use on our RTMP servers, it is very stable, easy to manage and very high quality.
There are many reasons for using Wowza to provide HLS streaming services compared to a generic web server. You’ve essentially listed them yourself, though to provide a few specifics; Wowza’s HLS implementation includes robust DRM functionality, timed data events via ID3 tags, alternative audio tracks. More are listed here.
I would recommend reading our Quick Start Guide which covers the concepts involved. For more detail around the HLS capabilities I’d suggest you try our rtmp free trial account, on our site.
We also use it for live streaming on sports and Church services with live streaming, we adjust the server to reduce the latency, wecan reduce to 5-6 seconds by making some adjustments.
