AtHome Camera

Price: Free app / Hardware costs money

AtHome Camera is one of the better and more popular DIY home security apps. Its biggest feature is support for multiple platforms. It has apps for Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows. The service comes in two separate apps. The camera app turns your device into a camera while the other app lets you monitor. Some of the features include time lapse recording, multi-view for up to four cameras, remote monitoring, and even facial recognition. This is a great way to re-purpose old laptops or smartphones. It also has a series of hardware cameras if you want to go that route. The app itself is free.

Alfred Home Security Camera

Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $29.99 per year

Alfred Home Security Camera is one of the most popular home security apps for mobile. It lets you re-use old smartphones for home security purposes. This one features remote access, live video streaming, some free cloud storage, a walkie-talkie function, zoom, and more. Many of the features are available for free. However, some stuff, like HD recording, is only available through the monthly subscription. It has its issues, but the pros usually outweigh the cons for most. The app is otherwise free to download and use.

IP Webcam

Price: Free

Mi Home Security Camera App For Macbook Pro

IP Webcam is one of the simpler home security apps. It turns your phone into a remote camera. The app has a decent, if basic set of features. They include support for VLC player, live video streaming, Ivideon support, support for FTP servers and Dropbox, motion detection, and video chat support. This is one of few good free home security apps. It does take a few minutes and some brain power to set up, though. The app is supported by advertising. Otherwise, it’s completely free.

Mi Home Security Camera App For Pc

TrackView

Price: Free / Up to $59.99 per year

TrackView is kind of an all-in-one option for this sort of thing. The app contains a two-way radio, a family locator function, a GPS phone finder, and it functions well as a home security camera. The security camera features include motion detection, a night vision mode, remote audio and video recording, and cloud storage to backup recordings. This one has a few tiered plans that unlock various things. It can get rather expensive but the cheaper versions should work well enough for most folks.

WardenCam

Price: Free / $5.99

WardenCam is another home security app for your old phones. It claims to work anywhere over 3G, 4G, and WiFi. Additionally, the app offers multi-camera setups, Google Drive and Dropbox support, motion detection and alerts, two-way audio support, and above average developer support. This one requires a single cost rather than a monthly subscription. That’s always preferable. The UI is decent and the app is rather simple to use.

Bonus: Actual smart security cameras

Price: Free apps / Hardware prices vary

The very best home security apps pair with their hardware counterparts. Popular smart home products like Nest, Netgear, and LG smart cameras have their own apps. Additionally, some traditional security companies like ADT or Vivint started rolling out their own apps. Finally, there is a range of security cameras available from companies like Nest and most of those have apps as well. Generally speaking, your best bet is to find the hardware camera that works best for you and just use the app it comes with. Re-using your old phone is great for this stuff, but it simply can’t beat devices designed for this specific task. Good luck!

Setting up Mi Security Camera 360

Quite obviously, you'll need the Mi Home app to set up the Mi Security Camera 360.

Download Mi Home from Play StoreDownload Mi Home from App StoreFor

Step 1: Once you have downloaded the app, you'll need to log-in to it using your Mi credentials. You can either sign in using your number or your email address.

Once done, you'll see a small plus icon at the top-right corner of the app's homepage. Tap on it to add the device.

At this point, you can either choose to add the device automatically or manually. Though the first method seems feasible, the latter is more suitable for this camera.

Tap on Camera and select your camera from the list.

Step 2: Next, you'll be asked to reset the device. To do so, plug the camera to a power source. The camera will first calibrate itself by rotating horizontally and vertically. Once done, press and hold the Reset button at the base until you see the LED light near the lens blink Orange.

Once done, hit the Next button, and choose the Wi-Fi network from the list. Now, comes the tricky part.

The Mi Home app will present you with a QR code, which you need to scan using the tiny camera. It should not take much time. However, it is a time-consuming affair and can around 5-7 minutes for the camera to register the QR code and then scan it.

To achieve faster results, tweak your phone's brightness to the highest level and hold the phone in front of the camera at a distance of around 15 cms.

Once the scan is registered, the Mi Home Camera's LED light will turn Blue. And so begins the process of setting up the camera.

Pro Tip: The camera scans the code faster if the phone has an LCD screen. For phones with AMOLED screens, the operation can take up to 15 minutes.

Step 3: Once you add the device to the Wi-Fi network, the app will ask you to choose a room for the device. Enter a name or choose one from the available names and hit the Next button. That's it. You have completed the setup process.

Now, tap on the small circular icon to point the camera to the area of your choice. And whenever you want to record a particular snippet, just press the Video button.

Other than that, you can also pick the recording on the Mi Security Camera 360. By default, it picks up Auto and you can choose between HD and Low.

Additional Settings of the Mi Security Camera 360

1. Tweaking the Camera Settings

By default, the Mi Security camera has a series of settings, which are good for basic monitoring. But should you want to get the most out of this camera, you'll have to dive into the Settings (three-dot menu on the top-right corner).

The first and foremost setting that you should change is the Wide Dynamic Range mode. That feature enhances the quality of the video by balancing the overexposed and underexposed areas.

These settings are available under Camera Settings > Image Settings. Once in, toggle the switch for Wide dynamic range mode.

2. Enabling Sleep Mode

Since the Mi Security camera is an indoor camera, you wouldn't want it enabled at all times, especially when you are at home. At least I wouldn't.

Apart from motion alerts (which we'll see soon), it can also eat up space on your SD card. Hence, the best way is to put the camera in sleep mode.

To do so, tap on the Shortcuts icon at the bottom-right corner and tap on the first icon. Simple, see.

However, if you find it cumbersome to do that daily, you can also set a Sleep Schedule. For that, tap on Camera settings > Sleep Settings and tap on Scheduled sleep time.

Enter the start time and end time as per your preference, and that's it.

3. Modify the Night Vision Settings

The Mi Security camera also lets you switch to colored footage even in low light conditions. Head over to Camera settings > Night-vision Settings and toggle the switch for Full-color with low light.

4. Set up Motion Alerts

Last but not least, let's have a look at the Motion Alert Settings, one of the most important settings. The camera notifies you via the app if it detects any motion and at the same time, it'll start recording the footage.

Even if you do not have a microSD card installed (which you should), the clip will be encrypted and stored in the cloud for 7 days. This option is not enabled by default, and you'll have to turn it on manually.

To do so, tap on the Monitoring icon at the bottom ribbon. Tap on the Home monitoring button at the bottom to activate the Home Surveillance Assistant.

The sensors of the Mi Home Security camera are pretty up to the mark, and it'll also alert you even if the sensor is activated by something as trivial as a mosquito (yes, it has happened multiple times). Hence, the best bet is to crank down the sensitivity level a bit.

To do so, tap on Alert sensitivity and select Low from the available settings. And while you are at it, you can also modify the Alarm interval.
